news continued tributed to an increase of coal inventory supplies at electric utilities and fewer tons of steam coal used in electricity generation. Rhino attributed the softer demand for met coal primarily to a decrease in worldwide steel production due to economic weakness in China and Europe. Rhino's decrease was partially offset by higher sales at the company's Castle Valley underground operation in Emery County, Utah. For the year ended December 31, 2012, Rhino's total revenues fell to $352 million from $367.2 million in the previous year. In Central App, Rhino's coal revenues decreased by $41.6 million, or 20.3%, to $161.3 million in 2012, from $202.9 million in 2011. In Northern Appalachia, the company's coal revenues decreased modestly by $6.4 million in 2012, to $102.9 million, from $109.3 mil- % 2 0 1 3 A W A R D S WVCA Hands Out Awards at Symposium During the West Virginia Coal Association's (WVCA) 40th Annual West Virginia Mining Symposium, held March 6-8, numerous mining companies were recognized for their commitment to the environment and others for their safety efforts throughout 2012. However, coal revenues per ton in Northern App increased by $1.87, or 3.5%, to $54.87/ton in 2012, versus $53/ton in 2011. The increase largely was the result of higher contracted prices for steam coal. Meanwhile, coal revenues for its Rhino Western segment rose by $18.7 million, or 86.4%, to $40.4 million in 2012, compared with $21.7 million in 2011. Coal revenues per ton for Rhino Western were $38.89 last year, a decrease of $3.89, or 9.1%, from $42.78 in 2011. Rhino blamed the tonnage decrease on lower market prices for coal produced at its Castle Valley mine. In 2012, Rhino said, its coal inventories increased by approximately 29,000 tons from 2011, due to weak demand in the steam and met coal markets. • White Flame Energy's Superior surface mine in Logan County • CONSOL Energy's Peg Fork surface mine in Mingo County Region 3 – Preparation Plants • Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Rock Lick siding in Boone County • Apogee Coal Co.'s Fanco plant/loadout in Logan County • Mingo Logan Coal Co.'s Cardinal prep plant in Logan County • Phoenix Coal-Mac Mining's No. 22 prep plant in Logan County Region 4 – Underground Operations • White Buck Coal Co.'s Grassy Creek No. 1 in Nicholas County • Mammoth Coal Co.'s Slabcamp in Kanawha County • Pocahontas Coal Co.'s Josephine No. 3 mine in Raleigh County • White Buck Coal Co.'s Hominy Creek mine in Nicholas County • Brooks Run Mining Co.'s Saylor B mine in Braxton County Region 4 – Surface Operations • Simmons Fork Mining's Ewing Fork No. 1 mine in Raleigh County • Pocahontas Coal Co.'s Tommy Creek Mine South in Raleigh County • Revelation Energy's S7 surface mine in Fayette County Region 4 – Preparation Plant • Coal Clean LLC's West Branch prep plant RECLAMATION AWARDS • Surface Mine South: Alex Energy Inc. for exemplary performance in reclamation on the Whitman surface mine. • Coal Refuse South: Pocahontas Coal Co. for exemplary performance in reclamation on the East Gulf complex. • Deep Mine South: CONSOL Energy for exemplary performance of reclamation at the Itmann No. 3 mine. • Refuse North: Wolf Run Mining Co. for exemplary performance in reclamation on Reed Hollow Refuse. • Surface Mine North: Ten-A Coal Co. for exemplary performance in reclamation of the Koon surface mine. • Haul Road Construction South: Met Resources, LLC for exemplary performance in haul road construction of the McComas haul road. • Surface Mine South: Met Resources, LLC for exemplary performance of reclamation on the McComas No. 1 surface mine. • Refuse Reclamation North: Kanawha Energy Co. for exemplary reclamation of a prelaw refuse in the Jackson Hollow Refuse. • Coal Refuse/Coal Impoundment: Mingo Logan Coal Co. for exemplary techniques and innovative design of the Mountain Laurel complex's treatment system. • Surface Mine South: Apogee Coal Co. for exemplary construction techniques at the Guyan surface mine.
