When the driver activates any of the machine's controls, the engine starts immediately, and the work can continue. The optional start/stop capability can be deactivated or reactivated as needed. In addition to reducing operational costs through lower fuel consumption, automatic start/stop improves the environment by lowering emissions to the surrounding air. Timken Acquires Interlube Systems A Liebherr 9800 hydraulic excavator loads a 282B haul truck at a coal mine in Indonesia. Even though world economic development was weaker in 2012, the year progressed well for the Liebherr Group. The company recently reported that total turnover increased by more than $995 million (more than 9%) to $11.9 billion. The company supplies equipment to many areas. In the construction machinery and mining equipment product areas, Liebherr increased its sales revenue by almost $641 million or 9%. Total sales revenue from these areas was approximately $7.68 billion, or about two-thirds of the company's total turnover. There was an above-average rise in turnover from the mining division, by almost $367 million or 28%. This was a slight increase on the previous year's rate of growth. Total sales revenue was $1.68 billion. In the 2012 business year, the Liebherr Group's turnover went up in all its sales regions. On the African continent, turnover reached some $772 million, more than $157 million or 26% higher than in the previous year. In the Far East /Australian region, Liebherr was able to repeat the positive tendency noted in the 2011 business year. The 12% increase in turnover for 2012 was approximately the same as had been achieved in the previous year. The region yielded sales revenues of approximately $2.19 billion, about $236 million more than in 2011. 64 www.coalage.com Automatic Start/Stop Option for Industrial Engines Volvo Penta of the Americas has introduced automatic start/stop as an option for its industrial diesel engines. The company estimates the function can achieve fuel savings of 5% or more by switching the engine off when idling. "Automatic start/stop is becoming increasingly common in private cars, switching off the engine to save fuel at stop lights or when idling in a queue," said Ron Huibers, president, Volvo Penta Region Americas. "Volvo Penta is now offering the same functionality for industrial engines. Fuel consumption is by far the biggest cost for operators of industrial equipment in areas such as material handling, construction and mining. When fuel can represent up to 90% of the machine's lifetime operating costs, a reduction of up to 5% in fuel consumption is extremely valuable. "Improving the environment is one of the core values of Volvo Penta," said Huibers. "The introduction of automatic start/stop is part of our ongoing efforts to improve our engines' fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, while at the same time optimizing performance and minimizing downtime on the job." The automatic start/stop function works in the same manner as in a private Ohio-based Timken Co. has acquired U.K.based Interlube Systems Ltd. for an undisclosed sum, company officials announced. From its Plymouth headquarters, Interlube employs 90 people and generated $13.1 million in 2012 revenue. It produces lubrication systems for commercial vehicles, construction, mining and heavy and industries, with operations in Ohio and a joint venture on mainland China. The purchase includes Cheltenham-based MSP Distributors Ltd., which was acquired by Interlube in 2007. Timken's "global reach will provide enhanced investment in the Plymouth facility," said Interlube Managing Director Mike Cusack. ALL Erection & Crane Rental Fortifies Fleet with Liebherr Package Purchase The ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. has acquired seven Liebherr cranes, including the all-new LTM 1750-9.1. This 900-ton all terrain crane is the second of its type to come to the U.S. A 9-axle 18-wheeler was designed to fill the gap between Liebherr's 600-ton and 1,500-ton ATs. Rated at 900 tons, the behemoth LTM 1750-9.1 offers mobility, transportability and quick assembly—all on a chassis no longer than that of a 600-ton crane. The road-friendly LTM 17509.1 can travel at less than 155,000 lb GVW by easily removing the complete telescopic boom, the upper engine, and the rear outriggers. When the crane reaches the jobsite, the shorter but stronger-than-average boom can be self-installed with the aid of an auxiliary rolling power pack and without the use of a specialized boom launch trailer.
