product news continued Kangra Coal Gives Green Light for Yellow Machines At the beginning of 2013, two Eickhoff continuous miners commenced production at South African underground operation Savmore colliery after the owner of the mine, Kangra Coal (Pty) Ltd., commissioned their own mining operations in their 1.8- to 2-m Dundas low seam area. Currently one low profile Eickhoff CM2H-30 and another recently refurbished Eickhoff CM2H-37 are successfully cutting at the Maquasa Adits on a 10production shifts per week roster and two maintenance shifts per month. Kangra Coal employs about 720 staff and annually extracts approximately 4 million metric tons (mt) of raw coal from the operations that are located approximately 60 km West of Piet Retief, Mpumalanga province. About 2 million mt clean coal production is exported via the Richards Bay Coal Terminal in which Kangra has a corresponding entitlement of the entire handling capacity of this deep water port. The remainder of Kangra Coal's production is sold to local customers like the Mondi paper mills. The five plunger design offers significant benefits over traditional designs in terms of reliability, maintenance requirements and noise during operation. Because the load on each plunger is reduced in comparison to three plunger pumps of similar specification, there is a 40% reduction in the fluid velocity per plunger that Eickhoff successfully supported the contractor business, previously employed by Kangra Coal, for more than six years. results in lower hydraulic noise. The crank is able to turn slower, which reduces mechanical wear and noise, while stroke lengths are longer, leading to fewer reversals. Overall the pump features a smoother pressure profile, which reduces the impact of surges on other critical items of equipment within the system such as hoses and valves, which means the entire system offers increased reliability over competitors. www.rmipsl.com Medium Voltage VFD TMEIC recently announced an improved version of its rugged TMdrive-70 medium voltage, variable frequency drive (VFD), used to provide high torque and overload capability. Applications include fans, pumps, compressors and mine hoists, among others. The new TMdrive-70e2 features lower cost, higher power level, reduced footprint and enhanced safety features. The IEGT-based drive is water-cooled and designed for operation with induction or synchronous motors. It operates at up to 3,300 58 www.coalage.com May 2013
