Huesker thinks the EPA will insist that all CCR surface impoundments be designed, constructed, operated and maintained with adequate slope protection to protect against surface erosion at the site. With best practices in various geosyn- thetic/textile applications (surface ero- sion, capping, lining, slope reinforcement, base reinforcement, etc.) in mind, Huesker has responded to the EPA rulings by offering a comprehensive set of solu- tions including services. "We understand the electric power generating companies will respond differ- ently to the recent rulings of the EPA and each of those companies will have varying needs based on current conditions, how- ever, we wanted to be prepared to help the industry address their varying needs by building a complete multifaceted set of solutions for them to consider," said Todd Julian, vice president, sales and marketing for Huesker. Sixth Siwertell Unloader Ordered for Mai-Liao Power Plant Siwertell, part of Cargotec, has secured a contract to supply a sixth unloader for the Mai-Liao power plant in Taiwan. Five large Siwertell unloaders are currently in operation supplying coal to the 4,200- MW facility, the third largest in the coun- t r y . T h r e e o f t h e u n l o a d e r s w e r e delivered in 2001 and two in 2006. "This contract strengthens Siwertell's position as the No. 1 in coal unloading," said Per Karlsson, managing director, Siwertell. "Since 2000, the company has sold more than 50 coal unloaders. More than half of these have a rated capacity of 2,000 tons per hour (tph) or more." Siwertell will deliver a ST 940 DOB- type ship unloader on a turn-key basis. Designed to unload coal from vessels of up to 180,000 dwt at a rated capacity of 2,000 tph, it will replace an existing grab crane. It will also be used to unload salt at a rated capacity of 2,200 tph. The oper- ator already has experience in Siwertell's m u l t i c a r g o c a p a b i l i t i e s , a s o n e o f i t s existing unloaders is used to handle both of these commodities. The power plant is co-owned by the Mai-Liao Power Corp. and Formosa Petrochemical Corp. (FPC). In addition to the five Siwertell unloaders in Taiwan, FPC operates one Siwertell unloader in China and one in the U.S. It also operates two high-capacity unloaders in Vietnam. Karlsson said delivery of these unloaders was a major market breakthrough for Siwertell, because they were the first dedi- cated coal unloaders provided for a steel production plant, offering massive opera- tional savings for the owners. The investment in the equip- ment and resources gives the company the opportunity to generate new, innova- tive products. "We spent more than a year testing more than 100 formulations in the labora- tory, in the field, and internally to ensure that we put the highest quality urethane blades on the market," said Ryan Grevenstuk, senior product manager at Flexco. "We continue to invest to ensure we're creating products that withstand the most demanding applications." In-house and in-field tests were con- ducted by Flexco specialists until it was determined that the blades met the com- pany's quality standards. The success of the blades has encouraged it to continue innovating with other custom urethane products. " T h e s e c a p a b i l i t i e s w i l l s p e e d t h e time it takes to bring innovative products to market in terms of development and delivery, continually enhancing the qual- ity we put into every product we make," Grevenstuk said. "We continue to make investments in our manufacturing capa- bilities in the U.S. and around the world to ensure our products can be delivered to local markets in a timely and consis- tent manner." Flexco also recently invested in two new side-by-side incline conveyors to expand the testing and research and development capabilities on its heavy- duty products. This latest addition to the internal test units Flexco has at its disposal features a 36-in. wide belt and a 750- ft/min top speed, along with an integrated belt scale and a tph meter. The new con- veyor loop gives the company's engineers the chance to conduct internal testing that mirrors realistic conditions in the field and augments current laboratory, field and other conveyor testing performed on Flexco products. s u p p l i e r s n e w s c o n t i n u e d January 2016 www.coalage.com 41 Siwertell ship unloaders and loaders use screw conveyor technology in combination with belt conveyors to handle coal.
