The safety improvements involve a set of long bolts and a heavy-duty plate attached to the back of the casing, where two pistons apply and remove pressure from the system. "Should the pressure release mecha- nism fail in any way, either through the actual device or the software — which is password protected — this arrangement a n d t h i s p l a t e w o u l d p r o t e c t w o r k e r s from harm," said Paul Lessard, market- ing manager for TPH. "Even if all of those t h i n g s w e r e t o g o w r o n g a n d t h e u n i t would become over-pressurized, there is nowhere for the pistons to go." Mining companies are making multi- million dollar investments in these units and they need to understand that they are safe, Lessard explained. TPH is now placing these units on all of their filter presses.
