"We didn't work in a silo," said Richard Sterzen, GIW industri- al engineering manager and project lead for the new foundry. "Everyone did their part — from the KSB board down to the hourly workers — to make this project a success." The newly expanded foundry is the top white-iron foundry in the world, according to GIW, boasting cutting-edge equipment, excellent safety features, and enough space to efficiently move, assemble and store some of the largest pumps on the planet. Not only is this beneficial for the com- pany as a whole — now that it can ramp up production to meet the mining industry's growing demand for Super Pumps — but it's also helping with efficiency and safety. "Before the new foundry was complete, we were having to do a lot of workarounds in our original facility to accommodate the larger pumps," Sterzen said. "We were using two cranes just to lift the 60-ton molds, and once they were filled and weighed up to 125 tons, we had to take them apart to move them." The new foundry has made these work- flow and space issues things of the past. "Now we can convert the original foundry back to creating the size parts it's intended for, which will make it cleaner and safer for everyone," Sterzen said. Voltabox to Develop Smart Batteries for Mining Equipment Voltabox, a subsidiary of paragon AG, based in Austin, Texas, has struck an exclusive stra- tegic partnership with Joy Global to develop smart battery systems for mining equipment. The first deliveries of complex battery sys- tems are planned for fiscal year 2017. "Mining companies worldwide strive to improve safety, lower production costs, and increase overall productivity. More- over, environmental legislation and rising safety standards present great challenges in many countries. Widespread deploy- ment of Voltabox battery systems is there- fore a game-changer," said Klaus Dieter Frers, founder and CEO of paragon AG. "We are delighted to say that this partner- ship will enable us to set a major milestone in our company's history." "As an essential partner to the mining in- dustry, we are always looking at new ways to help customers lower their total cost of opera- tions and safely optimize performance," said Peter Salditt, president of underground min- ing for Joy Global. "Working with Voltabox on these new systems is another step forward for our wide range of products." During the first stage of this strategic partnership, Voltabox will develop smart battery systems for use in some of the company's underground mining equip- ment. The benefits of lithium-ion tech- nology, coupled with advanced energy system design, active thermal regulation and smart battery management, will give this equipment performance and cost ad- vantages not achievable with any other drive technology currently available on the market. Matrix Awarded ISO Management System Certification Matrix Design Group was awarded the International Organization for Standard- ization (ISO) 9001:2015 Management System Certification. "This certification reflects our commitment to continuously improve the quality, durability and reli- ability of our systems for our customers, while helping provide them with lower cost of ownership and lower cost per ton, all of which is vitally important to our clients during these challenging market conditions," said Matrix President David Clardy. The ISO 9001:2015 Certification is the world's most widely recognized stan- dard for quality management systems. It helps organizations consistently meet the needs of customers and other key stakeholders in both the delivery and continuous improvement of products and services. Amec Wins CCR Contract With KU-LG&E; Amec Foster Wheeler has started work on an engineering, procurement and con- struction contract for Louisville Gas and Electric Co. (LG&E;) and Kentucky Utilities Co. (KU) for a coal ash or coal combus- tion residuals (CCR) treatment project in Trimble County, Kentucky. The project will transition Trimble County Generating Station's CCR process- ing from a wet system to a state-of-the-art closed-pipe dry conveyor system to con- vey bulk materials. Closed-pipe conveyors typically used for conveying bulk materials such as flyash and gypsum, as at this site, for long distances where space is an issue and steep inclines are necessary.
