2016 2 www.coalage.com May editor's note Committed to the Coal Business Y ou may not have noticed it, but a change has taken place. There was a slight change to the masthead (that column of fine print to the right) and the title below my signature is now different. Late last year, I formed a new company, Mining Media International Inc. based in Jacksonville, Florida, and purchased Coal Age along with Engineering & Mining Jour- nal (E&MJ;) and other mining-related properties from Mining Media Inc., the Denver, Colorado-based company that has owned the titles since 2003. The title publisher was added to editor-in-chief below my signature. Shortly after MINExpo 2016, the former owner, Peter Johnson, expressed an interest in selling the titles. In a friend- ly transaction, he sold them to Mining Media International at the beginning of the year. The similarities with the company names were intention- al. Our hope was to implement as smooth a transition as possible for our readers and the advertisers that support the titles. For the last four to five months, we have been working to separate these businesses and their respective intellectual proper- ties (databases, websites, etc.). Now that Mining Media International Inc. has been firmly established, we are making changes to improve operations. Since it was founded in 1911, Coal Age has served as a trustworthy source of technical information for professionals involved in coal mining, processing and utilization. We intend to uphold that standard. With insights on the economic and political forces that constantly reshape the market, Coal Age not only tells readers what happened last month, it often explains why it happened and what is likely to develop. As a free editorial service, Coal Age shares information and ideas on how to improve safety and efficiency at coal mining and processing operations. Coal Age is a reflection of the audience it serves and, like many of you, it barely managed to survive the "war on coal." Rather than publishing 12 thin magazines, we set a goal of publishing nine healthy magazines in 2017. We hope to increase that to 10 in 2018 and hopefully return to 12 times per year by 2020. To make this work, we had to combine some editions and that upset the publishing cycle, which caused delays in delivering the magazine. We are going to improve on that. Mining Media International Inc. will make significant investments to provide you with greater quality and value. Improvements to our print and digital editions and the website will include additional news and editorial content, as well as en- hancements in format and design that make reading easier, more informative and more enjoyable. Coal Age also offers free weekly updates with its MMI eNewsletter. You may have already received an email from us prompting you to renew. It's important. We offer these services at no cost to you, but you have to renew your subscription to continue to receive them. If you have not heard from us, please visit CoalAge.com and subscribe. Please feel free to mention this to your colleagues. Finally, I would like to thank Peter Johnson. We, meaning he and the collective group of people employed by Mining Media and now Mining Media International Inc., rescued Coal Age and the other mining titles 14 years ago during another diffi- cult period, and we built a great company. We are committed to the coal business. Likewise, I want to thank you for being a loyal Coal Age reader. www.coalage.com Coal Age, Volume 122, Issue 4, (ISSN 1040-7820) is published monthly ex- cept January, July and October, by Mining Media International, Inc., 11655 Central Parkway, Suite 306, Jacksonville, Florida 32224 (mining-media. com).
