news continued tons through the first nine months of last year, placing the industry easily on track to beat its normal rate. Blaschak established an internal record for production for the first three quarters of 2012, with about 350,000 tons prepared out of run-of-mine production that topped 680,000 tons. The companys total 2012 production was not available. Atlantic, meanwhile, also set a record at its Stockton surface mine in Luzerne County, currently the companys only coal operation in the United States. In 2012, Stockton also posted a 100% increase in run-of-mine production417,839 tons compared with 208,730 tons in 2011. Coal sales also climbed by 32%, to 140,213 tons last year from 106,403 tons the year before. Steve Best, Atlantics managing director, said the company has achieved top five producer status among all anthracite producers in Pennsylvania. We are now beginning to see the benefits of our investment program to improve the operation of the mine, and I look forward to continued improvement in performance, he said. In late January, Atlantic announced what Best referred to as a transformational transaction to exercise a lease option to acquire the fully permitted, 410-acre Pott & Bannon anthracite mining property from Reading Anthracite Co. in Schuylkill County, Pa. Best said the Pott & Bannon site, containing an estimated 13.6 million tons of run-of-mine coal or about 4.1 million tons of washed, saleable anthracite coal, holds the potential to more than triple Atlantics existing reserves. We intend to pursue an early route to production at the property, and are currently in the process of producing a detailed mine plan and updated reserve report. We intend to commence operations over the next 12 months and envisage this to be a standalone project, benefitting from the excellent local infrastructure and robust regional demand, Best said. Pott & Bannon is located only 25 miles from Stockton. While it remains early, 2013 appears to be shaping up as another decent year for anthracite production, according to Duane Feagley, executive director of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Council. Anthracite, also used as a home-heating fuel in parts of the country, is poised to perform at least as well this year as last, he said, with the proviso that the still weak U.S. economy could impact the industrys overall performance. Rhino Lands New Contract A new coal sales contract will allow Rhino Resource Partners to start developing a new underground mine in western Kentucky this spring, although the company cut production at its Sands Hill surface mine operation in Ohio and endured weak market conditions that negatively affected its metallurgical coal sales in 2012 from the Rhino Eastern complex in West Virginia it co-owns with Patriot Coal. In late January, Lexington, Ky.-based Rhino announced it signed a fixed contract to supply an unidentified regional electric utility with 800,000 tons of steam coal a year through 2017 from the Pennyrile Energy mine in McLean County, Ky. Rhino said it expects additional contracts in the near future, which demonstrates the high demand for this quality coal. Pennyrile, on which development is set to commence before the end of March, will be Rhinos first operating in the high-sulfur Illinois Basin. The company also controls coal reserves in Christian County, Ill., but has not disclosed a timetable to develop an underground mine there. Pennyrile will be located on the navigable Green River in western Kentucky which, the company said, provides unique lowcost access to a large customer base, including export markets. The mines contiguous reserve contains an estimated 32.5 million February 2013
