Kennametal Celebrates 75 Years of Advancing Innovation Kennametal marks its 75th year as an industrial technology leader. Founded in 1938, Philip McKenna's breakthrough invention of tungsten-titanium carbide alloys started a company of 12 employees and $30,000 in revenues in its first year. Since then, the company he founded, subsequently renamed Kennametal, has grown 100,000-fold to nearly $3 billion in revenues, serving more than 80,000 customers in 60-plus countries. The company's success holds true to McKenna's focus on continuously improving customers' productivity. Kennametal industrial technologies today enable advanced manufacturing; effective road rehabilitation; safe, efficient mining and energy production; and peak performance in transportation equipment, from planes, to trains and automobiles. "We drive a strong culture of innovation and performance at Kennametal, starting with knowledgeable people and proprietary material science to develop better tooling technologies and engineered components for the world's most demanding work," said Carlos Cardoso, Kennametal chairman, president and CEO. "Today, we consistently achieve 40% or more of sales each year from new products that offer customers at least 20% performance improvement." On March 1, the company will begin a year-long celebration with various activities planned throughout the globe. In related news, the company announced it had been named for the second year in a row as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by The Ethisphere Institute, a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anticorruption and sustainability. Michelin Sets Up Repair Accreditation Program Michelin Earthmover is partnering with its dealers and Tech International to launch a Repair Accreditation Program, providing consistent and quality earthmover tire repairs in Michelin's accredited repair shops. This new program enables end users to get the most value out of their tire investments. The program will provide dealers with a host of services. These include: training, technical support, inventory control sys- March 2013 tems, quality repair products and procedures, and traceability systems. Tech International will provide initial training, as well as biannual training on repair methods, product inventory procedures, and quality and traceability systems. "We have found that there is a need in the industry for consistent, quality repairs and we want to make it easier for end users to find them," said Michael Reich, Earthmover Services Category manager. "The Michelin Earthmover Repair Accreditation Program will ensure that earthmover tires are repaired to the industry's highest standards, leveraging the Michelin and Tech International relationship. Tech International will provide its industry leading repair products and procedures, and Michelin will monitor and track repairs for the benefit of the end user." The Michelin/Tech International certification/audit program will help verify that dealers are providing long-lasting and consistent tire repairs in all locations. An accredited repair shop will go through a series of these audits to prove that they meet the criteria for repair capability and quality controls. Liebherr to Invest in Newport News Expansion Liebherr is investing in its haul truck factory. In the foreground, the test track sits at the end of two manufacturing bays. Roads Economic Development Alliance to secure the project for Virginia. Virginia Governor Rob McDonnell approved a $500,000 grant from his Opportunity Fund to assist Newport News with the project. McDonnell also approved an $800,000 performance-based grant from the Virginia Investment Partnership program, an incentive available to existing Virginia companies. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding and services to support the company's recruitment and training activities. Liebherr Mining Equipment will invest $45.4 million to expand its haul truck factory in Newport News, Va. The company established its facilities in Newport News in 1970, and in four decades has grown to become the North American headquarters for four operating companies of the globally leading manufacturer. With this project, the company is making a significant investment in building improvements, machinery, and tools and infrastructure to enhance production of some of the largest mining trucks in the world. "For the past 40 years Liebherr has established a strong infrastructure in Newport News and Hampton. The area has a wealth of experienced workers and is in close proximity to our supplier and main customer base," said Joachim Janka, president, Liebherr Mining Equipment, Newport News Co. "As a family-owned business, Liebherr benefits from the ability to make countercyclical investments. We invest during unfavorable economic conditions to achieve superior returns in the long run. We believe in the resilience of the American economy and will be prepared to excel when market conditions improve."
