cy response plan and capabilities of underground teams. The company also previewed its newest self-contained res- cue system (SCSR), the Oxy 6000, which will be launched in the U.S. next year.
Mine Rescue Has Come a Long Way Since 2006, mine rescue training has become much more stringent as safety standards have increased. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 regulations required more mine rescue teams and more training by existing teams. "Some of the good things that came out of Darby, Sago and Aracoma were the number of teams and the awareness that you had to be better prepared for an emergency situa- tion. Now we have ensured that rescue teams are ready to go in a minute's notice. We saw that at Upper Big Branch. Though the explo- sion happened somewhere around 3 p.m., by midnight mine rescue teams from all over the region had already found 25 of the 29 bodies," said Stricklin. "There were four unaccounted for. One was bypassed, and the other three were very close to where we pulled them out of the mine because of explosions. The speed of response and the teams' abilities to find those fallen heroes proves how meticulously those rescuers worked. It was a very bad situation that we were able to get on top of in a way we proba- bly couldn't only a few years ago." Samson High Performance Ropes
For well over 100 years, Samson has been recognized as a worldwide leader in the development and manufacture of high-performance ropes. Among its many innovations, Samson invented the dou- ble braid and pioneered the first high modulus polyethylene fiber ropes. Today, Samson engineers continue to pioneer the use of new fiber technology developing innovative coatings and constructions to produce ropes with unprecedented perfor- mance characteristics. With more experience designing and developing synthetic ropes using Dyneema® fiber than any other manufacturer in the world, Samson's material technologists and research and development team are meeting an ever-expanding market need for products with exceptional performance in critical applications. The company's state-of-the-art facilities in Ferndale, Washington and Lafayette, Louisiana are ISO certified utilizing LEAN manufacturing and are both strategically located near major shipping ports.
The Samson Advantage is its commitment to ensuring safe and long-term operational benefits from its high-perfor- mance products from installation to retirement. From the outset, Samson works closely with its mining
partners by conducting research and on-site sur- veys to gain greater insight and confirm the best suit- able products for each mining application.
Samson's high-performance synthetic ropes outperform wire ropes because size-for-size, they're stronger, lighter and are more flexible, which means they're easier to handle and safer for the workplace. The long-term value of using Samson's high-strength ropes results in increased pro- ductivity as well as improved efficiencies with overall cost savings. Upon delivery, Samson's technical sales team and application engineers offer compre- hensive on-site crew training and technical support that continues with regular follow-up consultations. Samson's distributors are also experts in fabrication who can react quickly to technical queries and be on- site with stock in hand when needed. In the final analy- sis, experts depend on Samson synthetic ropes as a level of reliability, safety and productivity that wire ropes can- not approach.
